Fools Hollow State Park in Show Low is a beautiful and peaceful family-friendly getaway in Arizona!
Located in the picturesque White Mountains region, Fools Hollow State Park is a true hidden gem. With over 800 acres of lush forests, rolling hills, and sparkling lakes, Fools Hollow offers a peaceful and relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
One of the highlights of Fools Hollow State Park is the lake, which is perfect for swimming, fishing, and boating. Yes you can swim here! Definitely bring life jackets and water shoes are optional, but nice for the muddy lake bottom. The lake is stocked with a variety of fish, and there are fish washing stations available.
For families who prefer to stay on land, Fools Hollow State Park has two great options. The park’s main trail, the Fools Hollow Trail, is a 1.5-mile loop that winds through the park’s forests and offers stunning views of the lake. The trail is easy enough for families with young children to navigate.
There’s also a small trail off the amphitheater, which goes behind the camping area and along the lake. This trail is more shaded than the main trail, and good for warmer days. We love this trail! It’s a little rocky, but the kids enjoy rock hopping and finding pinecones.
But that’s not all Fools Hollow State Park has to offer. The park has a variety of camping options, from tent camping to RV camping. All campsites have a picnic table, fire ring, and close access to clean restrooms and showers. And with campsites located just steps away from the lake, it’s easy to hike, fish, or kayak.
For families looking for a little extra adventure, Fools Hollow State Park also offers seasonal mountain bike and kayak or canoe rentals. This option is usually available May-September. And you are welcome to bring your own too, like we did. There’s several boat ramps available, just ask at the entrance if all are open.
The nearby town of Show Low offers plenty of family-friendly activities. Our favorites are the Show Low Park and Aquatic Center, hiking at Show Low Creek, and going a bit further to Pinetop-Lakeside where there is gokarts and mini golf. Have lunch at The House, or pick up treats from PersNIKKI’s Cafe. Need a place to stay? We have a list of family friendly AirBnB options.
