Arizona Opera With Kids. When you bring your child to the opera, you introduce them to a world of musical drama, elaborate sets, costumes, emotions, and thrilling experiences! We had our first opera experience last month, thanks to the Arizona Opera and the comedy “The Barber of Seville”.

The Barber of Seville tells the story of two young lovers and their desire to be together. Figaro, the town barber, uses all his wiles to help the Count outwit Dr Bartolo and ensure true love wins the day. With excellent performers and a live orchestra, this was a wonderful first time opera experience.

The venue was Symphony Hall in downtown Phoenix, which was a joy to view in and of itself. Food and drinks options are available and helpful employees are available at numerous key spots for any questions.

Some tips for bringing kids to the opera:

  • Ages 8 and up will likely be able to sit through the entire performance, and read any subtitles (note, not all operas are in a foreign language, but if they are, subtitles are often offered right above the stage. Our show was in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles).
  • Read up on the featured opera beforehand! Have the kids familiar with the characters, basic plot, and listen to the music.
  • Pick a matinee performance over evening so kids won’t be as tired; plan ahead for snacks during intermission as lines can get long.
  • There were some kid packs in the main lobby, with info about the show and activities, like a word search.
