We were on a mission to visit every playground in Scottsdale, and somehow we missed George “Doc” Cavalliere Park in Scottsdale! Maybe because it is the farthest north, or maybe because I forgot about it, or maybe we simply saved the best for last! George “Doc” Cavalliere Park quickly became our new favorite. And the best part? SHADE! As in you can play there in the summer!
Playground
This sand playground is shaded. Not just one of those sun shades, but an entire shade structure. We were there on a warm day and not even a little hot under the shade. There is a little and big kid structure together in one area making it easy to keep an eye on kids. Plus it is is sort of all in one area, so less worry about kids running off.
Lots of options on the playground for playing and climbing. There is a green turf with sprinklers as well. The sprinklers were not turned on when we visited (no water was due to repairs being made). The turf does get hot, however, the sprinklers would make a great way to cool off. I love that this playground can stay cool during the summer hours.
Park
George “Doc” Cavalliere park in Scottdale is 34 acres, and has shaded playgrounds, hiking trail, lighted basketball courts, picnic areas, ramadas, restrooms (which people told me were not only beautiful but owls often were in there, but it was closed the day we were there). The park’s amenities are first come first serve. If you are planning on having a catered event, inflatables, or any specialty item they ask that you call the facility in advance to verify the company’s insurance information.

Sculpture Trail
This trail is one mile long. And it is definitely unique to get there up the wire stairs. Hint, do not wear flip-flops. The trail is narrow and there are a lot of cactus along the trail, so not a difficult hike, but if your kid wants to hold your hand while walking, it is not easy. Bring a small backpack or leave your stuff behind and just take a water bottle.
Getting There
There is a large dirt parking lot that GPS leads you to and has plenty of parking. This is the best place to park for the playground is at the end of the parking lot.
