We had a fun weekend at Apache Lake Marina and Resort recently, enjoying the beautiful views and water activities on Apache Lake. Yes, it’s a bit of an adventure to get here, but if you want fewer crowds and a fairly full lake option, this is it!
We stayed two nights at the resort, in a simple room with two double beds (brought a crib mattress for our toddler), a full bathroom, fridge and microwave, and a private patio with views of the lake. The room had air conditioning as well, which really helped during our afternoon siesta. Bring a DVD player to hook up to the TV (no Direct TV options).
There’s also a casual restaurant on-site open Thursday-Sunday, offering breakfast options, sandwiches, burgers, etc, and a full bar. The pizza was delicious! Also don’t miss the wings and jalepeneo poppers. You’re also welcome to bring your own food, including using a propane stove for cooking.
Activity wise, there’s a couple lawn games available, plus tetherball and volleyball – and of course the lake itself! Swimming and fishing is allowed, and there’s a couple beach type areas to set up and play. The resort offers rentals for boats, jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks!
We explored the lake on a pontoon boat the first day, and then jet skis the second day. Both were super fun!
You’re probably wondering about the drive to Apache Lake. The route via Tortilla Flats on the Apache Trail is still closed, with the only option being to travel to Roosevelt Lake, then south on the trail to Apache Lake. It’s unpaved and often narrow BUT our mini-van did fine, and the drive was gorgeous! (It took us about 2.5 hours from Scottsdale.) Note that there is no wifi available, and you may or may not have cell service (3G was available for us in certain areas).
Thanks to Apache Lake Marina and Resort for having us!
