The 9/11 Memorial in Gilbert is a simple but touching tribute to the day that will be forever in our hearts, and the people whose lives were tragically lost. The memorial features an 8-foot steel beam that once held up the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Even children can touch this real piece of history and learn.
The pentagon shape of the memorial includes a few benches and messages from donors. There are four walls with the names of those lost in the attack, including victims and responders. The steel beam is in the center. The memorial was unveiled at the 10 year anniversary of 9/11, in 2011.
There is nothing graphic included in this memorial. It’s a perfect way to introduce children to 9/11 in a respectful and hands on manner. Our eight year old asked a lot of questions and it led to some good discussions. Of course touching the beam was a highlight. Just remember to not let children climb on the beam itself.
It’s wonderful to have a piece of history in the Phoenix area. Many thanks to the city of Gilbert, donors, and others involved in making this possible.
