The nonprofit organization, Feed My Starving Children, was the place we chose because they allow children as young as 5 to take part in volunteering – kids helping kids.

Our experience was wonderful from our arrival 15 minutes prior to our scheduled volunteering window. You meet the volunteers, watch a brief video about the organization, and see some of the families in impoverished areas of Haiti and the Ukraine receiving their food pouches that we would be preparing.

We were given instructions for how to prepare everything and given a table with 10 to 12 people per table – so it’s fun to come with friends so you can all work at a group together! Everyone is given a description of their job, and then they make it fun as they announce “start!” and the competition begins to put together more boxes than the tables around you. Fun music plays on overhead speakers to keep spirits high, and as each box is sealed, you hear a collective cheer and applause from the room.

Each volunteering slot is just under 2 hours, so it’s not time intensive for younger children. If they enjoy being in the kitchen, they will especially love this because it involves measuring and scooping ingredients (vitamins, soy and vegetables) into bags of rice, and then weighing them before boxing them up. Everyone has a specific job (or you can rotate every 30 minutes to mix it up) and it’s an incredible team building activity for the whole family!

Reservations to volunteer must be made online. There are also donation opportunities available. For just $88, you receive a shirt and that money feeds a child for an entire year! It is truly such a wonderful organization. For more information, visit their website.
