Arizona Broadway Theatre (ABT) is a dinner and show theatre in Phoenix that prides itself on high quality food and performances. They offer about half a dozen Broadway shows per season, mainly at their own theatre in Peoria, AZ.
Elf: The Musical is this year’s holiday offering. We’ve seen other ABT musicals, like Beauty and the Beast and Mary Poppins, and by far this is one of our favorite shows! If you’re familiar with the movie version with Will Ferrell, you’ll love this musical version. It’s an excellent tribute to the movie! If this is your first exposure to Buddy and his infectious energy, you’ll love it too! It’s the perfect show for families, and will bring laughter and smiles for all ages. The musical version is reminiscent of old style Broadway shows, in both song and choreography.
Elf is the story of an orphan, that grows up with elves at the North Pole. Unaware that he’s really human, it’s a rude awakening when Buddy discovers the truth – and that he has a family in New York City! He sets off on adventure to find his dad and reconnect. Of course, it’s not as easy as he imagines. Real life New York City isn’t all cotton candy and joy, especially when it comes to Christmas. His dad is a serious businessman with little time for family. In the middle of trying to make sense of this new world, Buddy meets Jovie, who had the Christmas spirit years ago but has since buried it. Will she shut him out as well? And what will save Christmas? You’ll have to see the show to find out! It’s truly magical and captivating story, with catchy musical numbers that will linger for days. We may have immediately downloaded the Broadway Musical album from ITunes the next day – the songs were just that jolly and fun!
What gives this show life is mainly due to Tyler Pirrung in the star role as Buddy. From the moment he arrives on stage announcing “I belong in Christmas Town”, to the ending of “I’ve got a wife and I’m singing”, Tyler brilliantly executes the loveable elf to perfection. One could almost believe he came from the North Pole and adored Christmas with all his heart! Maybe he does.
My daughter and I saw Elf on opening weekend, and it was our first experience at their dinner stage! Dinner began at 5:30pm, and the show began at 7:30pm (ending around 10pm, with an intermission). You can just purchase a seat for the show. However we encourage you to opt for the dinner option, as this is what a true ABT experience is about!
There are several options for your dinner. Included are: bread, a starter, entree, and water. The kids menu is similar. Any appetizers, dinner upgrade, desserts or other drinks (alcohol or non) is an additional charge. (It’s clear what is not included with your ticket.)
My daughter opted for the kids cheese quesadilla and fries, and I chose the house salad, and pasta with chicken. We ordered a couple drinks as well as a dessert to share. Our favorite was the epic s’more brownie! The Jingle Juice (alcohol) was tasty as well. Our servers were helpful and prompt, and the kitchen seemed to keep up with the many orders.
We highly recommend ABT! This experience was a perfect start to the holiday season. We’re excited to visit again soon.
