Have you been to Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior? PHXkids contributor Liz and family visited over winter break and highly recommends it!

Our family recently enjoyed a beautiful sunny walk in the crisp Arizona winter air at the arboretum. This stunningly landscaped garden is open and working hard to give people a safe place to enjoy the outdoors.

Even though currently masks are required, it was very easy to socially distance at the garden. There were a few places along the walk that were close quarters, but in our experience, everyone was respectful of each other’s space, and would often wait at the end of a path for another party to pass, or move as close to the side of a path as possible. We also had plenty of opportunities to do a quick unmasked family photo when no one was nearby.

A day at the arboretum offers a relaxing change of pace. Being in the garden really did feel like a small escape from the stresses of everyday. My kids loved the children’s garden, and we were all fascinated by the unique plant life in Boojum Cove, and watching the ducks dive for food in Ayer Lake.

After my little one had an overly friendly experience with a cactus, we met a friendly volunteer and learned what a jumping cholla looks like. While their spikes hurt, they are not toxic. Some bandaids and lollipops saved the day.
This is a lovely place to take kids, dogs, and grandparents. We all learned a little bit about the desert we live in, and enjoyed a day outdoors exploring some beautifully cultivated nature.

Tours are also still running for patrons who register online in advance. The general tour is included, but some tours are a small additional fee. Admission is $15 for adults, $5 for kids, and free for children under 5, and healthcare workers with valid credentials. More information can be found on their website.
