Makutu’s Island

We finally took our own family to Makutu's Island this summer and wow....this is an epic indoor playground. Probably one of the most elaborate we've seen in the Phoenix area! And our daughter loved the bungee jump (extra $8 on top of admission) and the zip line!

We finally took our own family to Makutu’s Island this summer and wow….this is an epic indoor playground. Probably one of the most elaborate we’ve seen in the Phoenix area! And our daughter loved the bungee jump (extra $8 on top of admission) and the zip line!

That said, we offer some thoughts for any families planning a visit. This is not your average play area: there are completely dark (in the middle) slides, small spaces to maneuver, and numerous places to enter and exit. For solo exploring, we recommend at least ages 6 and up. For under 6, stay with a buddy or a parent. This is not the place for toddlers to free play. Our kids (ages 7 and 4) weren’t crazy about the low lighting in the entire play place. It also got extremely loud and crowded when a summer camp entered. We recommend calling ahead to see if there will be any large groups during your visit.

We think this would be a fun place for families with older kids. Or for parents who don’t mind exploring the network of epicness alongside tinier humans.

Bring your children on a trip to a land of fantasy and adventure: Makutu’s Island! The “Island” is a tropical-themed indoor playground—one of the largest indoor play places in all of the United States. The place is fun for the whole family—well, except for teenagers.

The centerpiece of the play area is the giant Banana Tree, which is filled with tunnels and slides (including one humungous 35-foot high slide!), and connects with the other three main play areas (The Cove, Palm Climb, and the Fantasy Tree) via a rope bridge. Your kids will also have a blast exploring the tunnels, going on the climbing net and zip line, and for the daring, there’s Captain Max’s Bungee Jump, which is sure to give your children a thrill, as they fly up to a bird’s-eye view of the “Island”.

The older kids will likely be attracted to The Inferno, a volcano full of video games which will keep them occupied, and for the littler ones there’s the toddler area, where you can keep an eye on your tots as they play in an area more suited to them.

After all that running around, your kids will want something to eat (and you might too!), so stop by Kiki’s Café and enjoy  a snack, or sit down to pizza, fries, quesadillas, salads, and more.

After you’ve all refueled, go to the Jungle Jamboree Theatre for storytelling, crafts, music, dancing, and educational endeavors.

Admission is $15.99 per child, with free admission for one accompanying adult per child. Hours are Monday-Thursday 9am-7pm, Friday 9am-9pm, Saturday 10am-9pm and Sunday 10am-7pm. Socks are required. You can stay and play as long as you like!
