Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix is a non-profit rescue and rehabilitation center for native animals, and also is open to the public for tours of their facility. This is a fabulous place to visit and learn more about hawks, owls, snakes and other local animals! We took a tour this month with other homeschoolers and learned so much.
Our group tour was employee led, and included a few extra activities. If you visit outside of a pre-arranged tour, you are free to wander and explore around the building, which is in the shape of bird wings! This includes outside viewing of the animal hospital, where they treat sick, orphaned, and injured wildlife that arrives daily. Be sure to read the informational signs along the wall, and peek in to the feather depository. The ducks at the pond are also very friendly!
There is also a large area called the educational trail which offers viewing of non-releasable birds of prey, like hawks and even bald eagles! Next to this trail is the amphitheater where you can catch up close experiences of some of the wildlife! The presentation starts around 11am. The kids loved this part, as each animals has a story of how they were found and brought to Liberty Wildlife. There’s plenty of time for questions and answers too.
Perhaps our favorite stop was the interactive room. Here the kids were able to see up close and sometimes touch snakes, millipedes, scorpions, lizards, and even a couple squirrels. It’s evident that the employees love their job and are eager to help children understand more about local wildlife.
