Holbert Trail in Phoenix. This trail offers a steady climb to the upper areas of South Mountain Park. Hike the extension trail that leads to Dobbins Lookout and be rewarded with a magnificent view of the valley below! Best hiking time would be October – May. Dogs are allowed, but must be on a leash.
South Mountain offers numerous hikes. They vary from beginner to expert. On our hike on Holbert Trail, we actually stopped to watch some rock climbers for a while.

Elevation Change: 1,100 ft.
Note, I found a few different distances ranging from 4.1 to 4.6 miles.
This trail starts off as rocks and cactus and then turns into city views. We found many petroglyphs along the rocks around the trail. The uneven and sometimes very rocky surface of the trail makes it more suitable to sturdy footwear.
We walked about a mile into this fun and sunny hike before the kids lost interest. I always like to note when they get a little tired or crabby because hiking back can be excruciating if you have miserable kids!
Restrooms
At the bottom of the trail there are restrooms available to use.
Picnic
There is a large area with tables. Plenty of room for a large group.
There is no shade on Holbert Trail. Do not forget to hydrate. I brought my backpack, and bladder, kids’ drinks and extra water in the bag. I also love bringing pouches for snacks on the trail because they provide extra hydration.

Getting There
Start at the park’s Main Entrance. Take the first left onto Phoenix South Mountain Park. From this road, proceed to Holbert Trailhead to continue onto Holbert Trail. A large parking lot is past the ramadas and restrooms for additional parking. Click here for GPS to the parking area.
